Supporting someone who may be in crisis

Last updated

If someone you know on Swivvia — or in your life — appears to be struggling with thoughts of suicide or self-harm, here's how you can help.

Warning signs to look for

• Talking or posting about wanting to die or to kill themselves

• Expressing feelings of hopelessness or having no reason to live

• Talking about being a burden to others

• Increasing use of alcohol or drugs

• Withdrawing from friends and activities

• Giving away prized possessions

• Saying goodbye as if they won't be seen again

What to do

If someone is in immediate danger

Call 911 (or your local emergency number) immediately. Stay with the person until help arrives if it is safe for you to do so.

If someone seems to be struggling but isn't in immediate danger

1. Reach out directly — ask them how they're doing in a caring, non-judgmental way

2. Take it seriously — never dismiss or minimize what they share

3. Listen more than you talk — you don't need to have the right answers

4. Encourage professional help — suggest they talk to a counselor, doctor, or crisis line

5. Follow up — check in with them again after your conversation

What NOT to do

• Don't promise to keep their struggles a secret if you believe they're at risk

• Don't leave them alone if you're concerned about immediate safety

• Don't try to argue them out of their feelings

• Don't share graphic details of their situation with others
